North Bohemian Glass Makers créate a collection of wine glass for Europe

PRESS RELEASE

North Bohemian glass makers create a collection of wine glasses for Europe

Jablonec nad Nisou, 16 June, 2022

To mark the occasion of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Crystal Valley in Liberec Region and the Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou present A EUROPEAN TABLE. North Bohemian glass makers have created 27 pairs of wine glasses symbolizing the member states of the European Union. The wine glasses were presented tto the public for the first time on 16 June in the permanent glass exhibition at the Jablonec Museum.

It is a logical choice for the Liberec region to use glass to promote both the state and the region during the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2022. “The wine glass was chosen as an allegory of friendship and communication, the fundamental values on which the European Union is built,” said Crystal Valley manager David Pastva.

Rather than being commissioned by the state for an important event, the concept of A EUROPEAN TABLE evolved naturally and organically. As early as 2020, the glass artist and designer Mária Burešová (*1951) created designs for 27 pairs of drinking glasses, in each case a wine glass and a champagne glass. Of particular importance was the interest of seven manufacturers of handmade glassware from the Liberec Region, who generously and without charge divided the designs among themselves and produced them under the auspices of the Crystal Valley and the Jablonec Museum. “Moreover, is it possible to find a better material to symbolize a united Europe than glass? Strong and fragile at the same time?” said Petr Nový, curator of the exhibition.

Several copies of the wine glasses were created making it possible for them to be exhibited in several places at the same time. “After the premiere in June in the Jablonec Museum, where they will remain at least until the end of this year, they will be presented in Warsaw, Łódź and Brussels,” Pastva said.
