Murano – a century of glass (1920 – 2020)

Rooted in time-honoured craftsmanship, Murano glass production became part of a wider movement of artistic modernisation in the 20th century. From the interwar period onwards, the opening up of glassworks to designers from the fields of decorative arts and architecture fostered unprecedented collaborations, characterised by experimentation with materials and the reinterpretation of traditional techniques.

In the 1950s, as Murano works were showcased at the Venice Biennales, this modernity manifested itself in a simplification of forms, a quest for purity of volume, and an exploration of colour and transparency. From the 1980s onwards, glass art shifted towards the creation of unique pieces, conceived as means of personal expression. Bringing together nearly two hundred and fifty works from public and private collections, the exhibition thus highlights thirty leading artists in Murano glass art, from 1920 to the present day.
